The music of Swiss Violinist Tobias Preisig is refreshing and poetic. Music that comes from the heart, deep-rooted and strong to let the four musicians explore new sounds and musical territories. "It has the accuracy of chamber music, the agility of jazz and the lightness of pop." Jazz 'n' More

Duo George Gruntz-Tobias Preisig

George Gruntz p, Tobias Preisig viol, David Liebman s

Recorded at Radiostudio Zurich by Martin Pearson July 2009

Here’s an exciting and resonant set from masters of the jazz world’s international improvisatory school. Correction: two masters and one newcomer. Jazz aficionados will immediately recognize pianist / bandleader George Gruntz and special invitee saxophonist / educator Dave Liebman, but who’s this whiz-kid on fiddle? Not such a kid, Tobias Preisig, 27, hails from Appenzell, the violin-loving canton in the Eastern Swiss mountains. His violin speaks with subtlety and finesse, an equal voice among his elders, as you will hear. Preisig recalls the bluesy grit of Stuff Smith, the fantasy-inducing elegance of Stephane Grappelly, and the eyebrow-raising élan of Jean-Luc Ponty -- with many a dark wisp of tzigane world-weariness. These three huntsmen wield sharp axes to whittle the changes of dashing, haunting originals, most by young Preisig. What an enchanting debut!
